Emily STAINER (b. 1980)
BIOGRAPHY
Emily Stainer was born in Johannesburg.
She holds an MA in Fine Arts from the University of Johannesburg (2003) and an MA in History of Art from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London (2006) – both obtained with distinction.
She lived in Jakarta, Indonesia, for eight years, before returning to Johannesburg in 2015.
Stainer paints small, intimate, hyper-real portraits – often of children.
Portraits by her were selected for the BP Portrait Award at the National Gallery in London in 2006, 2017 and 2024.
Stainer’s portrait Mikayla was displayed at the National Portrait Gallery in London in the summer of 2025 as part of the Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer exhibition.
