Herman Antoine Julien Henri VAN NAZARETH (b. 1936)
BIOGRAPHY
Born in Evergem, Belgium, Herman van Nazareth pursued his studies in Ghent and Antwerp before receiving a bursary in the early 1960s to attend the Michaelis School of Art at the University of Cape Town.
As a member of the anti-Apartheid Sestigers group, Van Nazareth gained prominence in the 1960s and 70s for his powerful, provocative works.
Aside from his well-known sculptures and portraiture, Van Nazareth has painted a series of landscapes of no specific geographic location, focusing on remembered moments, emotions, and atmospheric changes of light.
