IRIS AMPENBERGER (1916 – 1981)
BIOGRAPHY
Iris Ampenberger was a South African artist whose oeuvre includes oils, charcoal drawings and linocuts. She concerned herself primarily with figure studies.
She studied art at Port Elizabeth Tech Art School and Johannesburg Tech Art School.
Ampenberger travelled around South Africa in a caravan with her husband, Stefan Ampenberger, for 17 years, painting and exhibiting.
After settling in Thaba ‘Nchu in the Free State, she was invited to exhibit with the Bloemfontein group in 1964. She designed seven relief panels for Moroko Hospital, Thaba ‘Nchu, modeled in clay and cast in cement by Stefan Ampenberger.
Her work is held in the Pretoria Art Museum and the William Humphreys Art Gallery.
