PIETER GERHARDUS ‘PIET’ VAN HEERDEN (1917 – 1991)
BIOGRAPHY
Piet van Heerden was born to South African missionaries in Malawi. In 1927, he was sent to boarding school in Wellington, New Zealand.
He continued his education at the Cradock High School, where he started painting, and received his first formal art training from a Catholic nun.
The death of Hugo Naudé’s wife served as a catalyst for Van Heerden’s move to Worcester, South Africa in 1939. He continued to study under Naudé for the following two years, until the death of Naudé in 1941. Naudé’s tutelage is evident in the landscapes, figures and portraits that Piet van Heerden painted.
He is considered a typical exponent of ‘Cape Impressionism’.
