SOLOMON SEKHAOLELO (b. 1937)
BIOGRAPHY
Solomon Sekhaolelo was born in Heidelberg, Gauteng. In 1947, his family moved to Soweto, where he went to school. As a young boy, he made clay sculptures and weaved Sotho hats in his spare time. He was constantly drawing and painting from books, mainly using chalks.
Sekhaolelo is multi-talented individual—a cabinet maker, tailor, pattern designer, and musician who composes his own songs. His preferred medium is oil painting. From township scenes to atmospheric dreamscapes, his subject matter is wide-ranging.
When he was 20, he began marketing his paintings in curio shops around Johannesburg. This marked the beginning of his art career, which encompassed close to 50 group exhibitions around South Africa and in Germany, as well as seven solo exhibitions.
His work is held in numerous private and public art collections locally and internationally, including at the University of Fort Hare.
