Zakkie ELOFF (1925 – 2004)
BIOGRAPHY
Born in Botswana, Zaccharia ‘Zakkie’ Eloff was a painter of animals in nature. He received his schooling at Pretoria Boys High School, where he studied art under Walter Battiss. Having completed his schooling, he received art training in Johannesburg from Maurice van Essche and Phyllis Gardiner. In 1957, he went on a study trip abroad, worked at the Central School of Art in London and visited many European countries.
He taught at the Pretoria School of Art until 1961, when he became a game warden in the Etosha National Park in Namibia (then South West Africa). Thereafter, he became a full-time artist and lived in White River, distinguishing himself as a draftsman and graphic artist.
Eloff’s work is characterised by close observation and knowledge of animal behaviour- patterns in the natural environment. His drawings, which testify to his sensitive and rhythmic use of line, are included in various public and private collections across the country.
