BIOGRAPHY
Born in Cape Town, Jonathan Comerford attended the Frank Joubert Art Centre for five years and graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art, majoring in printmaking and drawing, from the Ruth Prowse School of Art in 1985.
He spent two years living and working in Scotland, working at Peacock Printmaking Studio and Cyrenian Art Centre, in Aberdeen. He returned to South Africa in 1988 and set up Hard Ground Printmakers Workshop, an independent printmaking studio.
He was the Chairperson of SAA Arts, Western Cape in 1991 and was involved in curating several South African printmaking exhibitions locally and internationally.
He was the 1994 recipient of the Volkskas Atelier Award, and spent six months working at the Cité International des Arts in Paris.
He has organised and run many educational printmaking workshops in Cape Town and has initiated exchange programmes with other international print workshops.
He has participated in the UCT Summer School programme. He has held several solo exhibitions of his works and has participated in a number of group exhibitions and biennales, both locally and internationally.
His work is represented in public and private collections in South Africa and abroad.
Comerford has been involved in a number of portfolio projects dealing with Human Rights and Aids issues. He was part of the Paper Prayers Aids portfolio in 1999.
