BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1947 in Umzumbe, KwaZulu-Natal and currently based in Dobsonville, Nhlanhla Benjamin Nsusha is a critically acclaimed artist with a 40-year career during which his work has been exhibited locally and abroad.

He learnt the technique of weaving from his mother, who was a proficient basket weaver, and went on to study at Rorke’s Drift Art School in KwaZulu-Natal and at the Slade Art School in London.

Nsusha is renowned for his skill in mixing materials and techniques, and for his attention to detail. He works with materials such as leather patches, buttons, electric wires of different colours, jeans fabric … and even R10 notes.

In 2019, his solo exhibition Thunga uThimule was hosted by the Margate Art Museum in KwaZulu-Natal – his first since the year 2000. His observations of people, society and things culminated in an extensive 67-piece exhibition that included ceramics, sculpture, print-making and paintings – some of which he worked on for 15 to 25 years.
