BIOGRAPHY

Born in Fort Victoria, Rhodesia (now Masvingo, Zimbabwe), François Roux attended the Boys High School, Stellenbosch from 1940 – 1946.

In 1946, he studied at Camberwell School of Art, London, and travelled in Europe. He went on to study painting at the Royal Academy Schools (a key part of the Royal Academy), qualifying with a Diploma in Painting in 1951. While in London, he participated in several group exhibitions.

Returning to Zimbabwe, he showed at the annual exhibitions held at the Rhodes Gallery. In 1967, he and his family moved to South Africa, settling in Rosebank, Cape Town.

From 1970 – 1978, he served as a part-time lecturer in painting at Cape Technikon (now Cape Peninsula University of Technology) and continued to teach from his home in 1978.

Exhibitions include Summer Salon, group exhibition at The Cape Gallery, Cape Town (2017); solo exhibition, The Cape Gallery (2013); solo exhibitions at the Atlantic Gallery, Cape Town (1976, 1978, 1981, & 1984). Public commissions included Portrait of the Mayor of Cape Town (1982), Portrait of the Headmaster, Diocesan College, Cape Town (1982), Portrait of Speaker J P du Toit, Houses of Parliament, Cape Town (1983).
