BIOGRAPHY

Nkosana ‘Dominic’ Tshabangu was born and lives in Dube, Soweto.

After completing high school, he studied art under the guidance of Philip Maulumise and Vincent Baloyi.

From 1985, Tshabangu attended The African Institute of Art at the Funda Centre in Soweto as a part time student. He received his certificate in Fine Art from Funda in 1992.

He also attained certification from The Visual Arts Teachers’ Training College.

Tshabangu works in various media, depicting daily life and historical events in a journalistic manner. In his collage paintings, he uses pictures and pages from magazines and includes found objects, like cloth and corrugated cardboard. His works have a mosaic feel and are vivid and colourful. ‘I tell short stories: scenes from the illegal bars, shebeen queen, how hostel dwellers have to live, and how hard work gives little reward,’ he says. ‘I try to make easy accessible work, to capture the history of my era for the coming generations to understand it.’

He has exhibited his work at the Wits Gallery; Everard Read, Cape Town; and the Pretoria Gallery, amongst others.
